A movie based on the board game Monopoly is on the way and we’re calling dibs on the racecar! Today’s episode of Clevver Newsfeed is brought to you by the new John Green movie, Paper Towns in theaters July 24! Board games haven’t had much luck translating to the big screen, but that’s not stopping toy companies from trying. Lionsgate and Hasbro have announced they will team up to adapt the popular board game Monopoly for the big screen and have tapped The Truman Show writer, Andrew Niccol, to pen the script. The film is being described as a family friendly action adventure about a boy from Baltic Avenue who uses Chance and Community on a quest to make his fortune, finding out what it means to be truly rich and avoiding Jail time in the process. Regarding the project, Lionsgate Co-President Erik Feig said quote, “[Andrew Niccol] is an inspired choice to develop this timeless property into a big, crowd-pleasing event film that will appeal to kids, families and anyone who has ever played the Monopoly game.” As for whom that is, the companies point out that Monopoly has been played by over a billion people in 114 countries and translated into 47 different languages since it was first published in 1903. This isn’t the first time Hasbro has attempted to turn Monopoly into a feature film. Ridley Scott was at one point set to produce a film, but it languished in development hell before moving to Lionsgate. Hasbro has had success with its Transformers franchise and modest success with last year’s Ouija, but there first board game inspired movie, 2012’s Battleship, was a box office dud bringing in only $65 million in the US off a budget of around $200 million. They are currently working on a Oujia sequel that is set to arrive in theaters on October 21st, 2016 and will release Jem and the Holograms on October 23rd. No word yet on when we could expect Monopoly to arrive in theaters. So we have to ask, do you think a Monopoly movie could work and do you like the plot?
